ARCHIVE NEWS & REPORTS

I fished with a couple from Vero Beach out on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes today and we had a TON of fun! We idled out from Camp Mack and made the run north to Lake Hatchineha to start our day. It was a perfect morning with the sunrise and calm waters and within minutes we had our first bass on a shiner and for the next 3.5hrs it was nearly non-stop action between topwater baits, swim baits, and the wild shiners. At that point they wanted to take a ride so we packed-up and went to go see several eagles in their nests and a dozen or so alligators which was the perfect topping do their awesome adventure.

It’s been abbreviated week for time on the water, but we’ve hit a ton spots on both the Winter Haven and Kissimmee Chain of Lakes.

I’m going to focus mostly on the forecasts for each which will reflect the reports as the weather patterns will be repetitive with more cold fronts rolling in every 3-4 days.

The good news for those fishing in Winter Haven on the South Chain and some of the independent lakes is that the deep water spring fed bodies with deep vegetation are going to be just fine. The bass will hold close to the springs for their warmth, oxygen and cover for the bait fish. And across these lakes there is a solid thermocline that they can take refuge under.

For artificial baits have Z-Man PaddlerZ and Zoom flukes in white or watermelon/reds on a belly weighted fluke to work the grasslines in 4’-12’. After this Super Moon Sunday night the cold front will set in and the fish will be postspawn and out in the intermediate depths.

Fishing shiners here use domestics in the 3”-5” range with 1/8oz to 3/16oz bullet weights to get them deeper. But, as always, very your baits as there may be bass feeding up higher, use your electronics to see where they are sitting.

On the Kissimmee Chain we have more water in the lakes which is great news. The cold fronts can make it tougher to fish because of there vast acreage that cools them down quickly when a front rolls in.

For that, good map studies of the hundreds of shell beds helps because they hold heat just like in the saltwater. That means better eel grass, bait fish, etc, and of course more bass. We also found, and will find bass on the outside of the hydrilla adjacent to bullrush and pad spawning flats.

We actually did better on 4”-6” wild shiners than the bigger ones, but lost a true trophy off an 8” shiner. My bet off the cold front and having postspawn fish is to go with a ML 4”-6” shiner because it is an easier meal for a fish that is cold, stressed, and exhausted.

For working artificial baits, we caught good prespawn fish on topwater twitch baits over the shell beds at the immediate edges of either bullrush or hydrilla. The surprise here was they didn’t want a Zoom Mag Trick Worm or a fluke which are my “go to baits” in these conditions, anywhere across the country, for multiple species.
