Well we somehow made it to the end of 2020, and Lord willing it will end quickly and quietly. I think we would all like to return back to our normal lives in 2021 and never speak of this past year ever again. I’m not sure how many snowbirds will be returning, it sounds like we’ll be busy out at Camp Mack. The uncertainty of the Canadian border opening could really reduce our winter population.
As for the weather this month the Farmer’s Almanac is calling for a slightly cooler than normal December. It’s forecasting an “up & down” temperature swing from week to week so we’ll see how that plays out.
Starting out on the Kissimmee Chain fishing out of Camp Mack I’m expecting a very fun month with the cooler temps moving the bigger fish up onto the flats and closer to their spawning areas. With that being said still concentrate on areas that do have some deeper water or even a small ledge with eel grass or pads nearby for the fish to fall back to if a harsh cold spell hits. When the temps are stable I’m going to make sure to have some bigger topwater baits like Spooks and a Devil’s Horse to imitate the bigger wild shiners that a lot of these fish will be feeding up on. Make sure to have your Gambler EZ Swimmers, spinnerbaits, and swimjigs at the ready also. And never leave home without some black & blue senkos.
Over in Winter Haven on the South Chain we’ll be looking for fish moving up into the intermediate to shallow grass lines. One of the bonuses to these smaller lakes is that it is easier to fish in higher winds and colder temps because many lakes sit down below the houses and hills. Knowing where you can find the grass flats that extend from 3ft out to 14-15ft with deeper water nearby is key, especially if we get hit with a harsh quick cold front. When the fish put the feedbag on you can throw pretty much anything you wish but always have the basics on hand to give yourself the best chance for success. Jerkbaits, flukes, senkos, and Gambler Little EZ Swimmers are all mainstays in natural colors as many of these lakes are spring-fed with clear water and higher visibility. Keeping an eye on your electronics is important when fishing here, not so much for marking fish as for finding bait. You find the bait and the bass will be close by.

Well it’s that time of year again when in a “normal world” we would realize the seasons are changing as the jokes start flying around down here on how the colors are changing with different license plates from every northern state. This year is different for all of us but we are still fishing and living life here to the fullest in Central Florida. With that being said I’d like to point out that the Visit Central Florida Outpost & Visitor’s Information Center in Davenport on Hwy 27 just 1/2 mile south of I4 has all of the new and up-to-date information on everything to do, and stuff that’s new, here in Polk County along with attraction tickets to most every park.
So to start with our World Class bass fishing out of Camp Mack on the Kissimmee Chain I expect it to be very good this month with the cooler weather as the Old Farmer’s Almanac is forecasting. I’m not really fond of the drier part of the forecast, I prefer a little rain to keep the lakes at a higher pool level while still having current with the locks open. Slightly cooler days & nights may not sound like much but on these big wide-open shallow lakes it can bring the water temps down and the big fish up onto the flats. I will still be starting every morning with a variety of topwater baits just as the sun is starting to roll over the tree lines, along with Gambler EZ Swimmers or Chatterbaits if out in open water. Honestly, the fish are going to tell us quickly whether they are roaming the open flats or up in the pads, grass, and reed heads. Always watch and listen to what is going on around you out here. The rest of the day is always a combo of black & blue senkos while still working the Gambler EZ Swimmers along with swim-jigs, and bigger ribbontail or mag trick worms.
Heading west over to Winter Haven and the South Chain of Lakes the weather is not going to change our approaches as much as it could on Kissimmee. Many of these lakes are deeper, some sit lower in a bowl, and they are spring fed so they do not change as quickly as the bigger lakes. Here we generally use smaller baits also because shad are the predominant bait. Smaller baits in natural colors will serve you very well, and when the water is extremely clear you may need to downsize your line as well. Watermelon red/pearl, whites, chrome, green pumpkin colors all work and pair them up with 10-14# fluoro or even mono.

Normally it’s rather easy to sit down and hammer out an article or fishing report but I was honestly having a tough time getting that first line down. So I took an old school writers lesson I was taught many moons ago - later made famous in Finding Forrester - and took a look at older articles and just started writing. As it turns out, we have about the same conditions here in Central Florida as from a few years back.
To start with let’s head out of Camp Mack, a Guy Harvey Lodge, Marina & RV Resort on the Kissimmee River. The quick version is the fishing has been very good for it being this dang hot! The full situation is we have been catching a good number of fish - and with quality big fish mixed in - in nearly every trip out and I fully expect that to continue. We’ve had heavy rains this summer in July and thru August and that has made the state keep the locks moving water through the system which can get the fish going on crazy feeding frenzies. I’ve focused all of our trips on finding moving water, if it’s still we just do not get the same big bites. But, when the water is moving across a grass flat or shell bed and you see birds hunting, you know the shiners, shad, flies, and other bait are there and I will promise you this: the bass are going to be nearby ready to join that party with the all you can eat buffet. Throwing topwaters, rattle traps, spinnerbaits, etc, in the mornings will continue to be highly effective. Once the sun is up high and the bite slows, pitch grass lines, pads, reed heads and just grind it out.
For those that are fishing in Winter Haven, the South Chain and other lakes, this has been an off-summer. We’re used to big schools of bass chasing bait all over the lakes in deep water this time of year and it’s been scattered at best. The best baits have still been pop-r’s, smaller swimbaits, jerkbaits, and flukes. We’re catching good fish but I guess I’m just used to more surface activity this time of year here. The oddest part is the bite has been best mid to late mornings which just doesn’t add up to me, but I always have to real myself back in and remember we’re chasing a fish that doesn’t reason, it reacts however it wants.
