Central Florida Bass Fishing Report Mach 2022 Winter Haven Lake Kissimmee Camp Mack

Well, February turned out to be an odd month weather-wise. It was origi-nally predicted to be steady with a 79* average, not even close. The first two weeks were brutal then it stabilized and so did the bass fishing after that on both the Winter Haven Chains and the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. We ended up catching better numbers of fish in Winter Haven but caught bigger fish on average out of Camp Mack.
So starting out in Winter Haven, we’re still working with a mix of pre and post spawn fish and that makes for great days on the water. The air and water temps should be rather stable - even though we are always subject to cold/storm front for a day or two - which will keep the fish feeding.
I’m a firm believer in fishing offshore over deep vegetation with a variety of shad imitation baits. Flukes, swim baits in your favorite brand, crankbaits, and jerkbaits are all highly effective this time of year. At some point this month the post-spawn fish should start schooling and chasing bait which brings your topwater baits into play. As for fishing with shiners I’ll have a combination of wild native and domestics from 3” to 6” whenever possible and switch them up until the bass tell you what they prefer that day. Some days it flat does not matter, other days they get a little particular as to their dining preferences.
Heading east to Lake Kissimmee and fishing out of Camp Mack I’m expect-ing a lot of great trips making lots of memories with new and old guests alike. Here, trips are a little more customized for each guest and their fish-ing preferences. If a client is more focused on strictly artificial baits we’ll be using a combination of hollow body frogs & soft body frogs like Gambler Buzz’n Cane Toads, Gambler EZ Swimmers, senkos, and Zoom Trick Worms. Those are all baits that are highly effective up in the jungle in heavy cover, as well as offshore over submerged vegetation.
For most trips though it’s fishing offshore over eel grass and hydrilla as well as shell beds in open water. On these trips we can effectively fish a combi-nation of both live and artificial baits. I like to give 5”-8” wild shiners swim-ming lessons off the back of the bay boat while guests fish with lures up front. A few of the best baits are a Spook or Spook Jr, a Devil’s Horse, jerk-baits, bladed swimjigs, and of course you have to have some flukes or sen-kos on hand.

I'll let the photo tell the story but when you have 2 young men both catch Trophy Catch Florida 8+lb bass within 5 mins of each other, it is a fishing trip of a lifetime! The 1st fish caught by Patrick on the left went 9lb 14oz, then Ethan caught his 8lb 8oz bass just moments later!!

Well this has been one wild and crazy winter so far from Thanksgiving up until now. We’ll go through the expected nice Florida weather then hit a speed bump and have another cold front from up north rudely interrupt us for a couple days then start all over again. As for the weather forecast for February, it’s looking to be a little warmer than usual with temps mostly upper 70’s to low 80’s and I am fine with that.
Let’s start out at the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes fishing out of Camp Mack, A Guy Harvey Lodge, Marina & RV Resort. One of our biggest challenges here is fishing after the Corps had their dredging project in Lake Cypress at the canal going up to Lake Toho clearing sand bars at the entrances. It’s gonna take more rain and some water movement to clean up the waters but there are still good fish here.
When fishing these lakes I’m trying to find cleaner water but if it’s still mucked-up some I’m using something with flash and/or vibration in the open water. There will be spots & pockets of reeds or pads that are looking good and or that stick to the usual frogs, Gambler EZ Swimmers, and black & blue senkos.
Moving over to the Winter Haven South Chain of Lakes we’re facing totally different conditions, but that is due more to the lakes themselves than “maintenance” of the big lakes.
On this chain you will find many spring fed lakes with cleaner, clearer, “greener” water with lots of points, deep grass lines, etc. As much as I love fishing out of Camp Mack, these lakes are a lot of fun to play on any given day. I’ll always have a fluke, jerkbait, rattle trap, and a swim jig tied on, plus the obligatory senko that you never leave home without.
I’ll always have natural colors tied-on but once in a while you may need something “different” with a loud color scheme. I’m a firm believer in the watermelon reds, pearls, bone, bluegill, and natural shad colored baits. You can never go wrong with those, plus a little chrome in your hard bait selection is always key.
I do have to add with the increased boat traffic at the ramp and on the lakes, please be considerate of others around you. If you pull up to a single lane ramp, do your boat prep prior to pulling up & backing down blocking others from launching timely who did there prep further back.
Also, when boats are fishing “just offshore” from docks, please do not assume you can run between them and shore. I say all that because I see it every day and want everyone here to enjoy their time on the water to the fullest.
